The Family Foundation School is a private therapeutic boarding school (high school and separate middle school) serving bright, talented teens struggling with behavioral or emotional difficulties who are not fulfilling their full potential. Our integrated approach helps them deal with a range of emotional or behavioral obstacles such as oppositional/defiant attitude and behavior, academic underachievement,
substance abuse, anger, truancy, disrespectful behavior toward parents and other authorities, and/or sexual promiscuity. Our students are typically diagnosed with ADHD, ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) depression, and/or anxiety and may also have a history of eating disorders, cutting, trauma, obsessive/compulsive use of computers/internet, and/or low self esteem.
We offer an integrated program of rigorous academics, daily therapeutic counseling, and character education based on the principles of 12-Step living. In fostering academic excellence, emotional health and spiritual awareness, the school provides tutoring and other learning support, honors college courses, award-winning programs in forensics, journalism, art, photography, music, dance, and drama; and a strong culture of positive peer support. Extracurricular activities include division-ranked interscholastic sports, as well as fly fishing, horseback riding, tennis, Boy Scouts, Venturing, weight training, hiking,
running and woodcarving.
The school, which is situated on a scenic 150-acre campus in the western Catskills of upstate New York, was founded on the idea of family and on the principles of honesty, love, and unselfishness. Students are divided into seven family units of about 30 students each where they receive the positive, nurturing attention that fosters these ideals. The structured, therapeutic environment and nurturing, supportive family living are designed to build character and heal student-family relationships.
